Trades Role

ABOUT THIS ROLE
First Class Welder is the formal trade classification for welders who have completed a Certificate III in Engineering — Fabrication Trade and are qualified to weld across a range of processes and materials. In practice the term is used broadly across Brisbane’s manufacturing sector to describe any trade-qualified welder, but the distinction matters. First Class Welders have the training foundation to work across joint configurations, welding positions and material types that a semi-skilled or process-limited operator cannot.
In a manufacturing environment, welders fabricate and assemble metal components, structures and products using MIG, TIG, MMA or flux-core processes depending on the material and application. The work ranges from production welding on repetitive components through to one-off structural or pressure-rated fabrication requiring weld procedure compliance and non-destructive testing. Welders who hold weld procedure qualifications are commonly referred to as coded welders. These tradepeople are in higher demand and command stronger rates.
Brisbane’s manufacturing and fabrication sector employs welders across structural steel fabricators, food and beverage equipment manufacturers, trailer and vehicle body builders, pressure vessel and tank fabricators, and general engineering workshops. The spread of applications means material experience — mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium — is often as important as process capability when matching a candidate to a role.
Our trades and engineering recruitment guide covers how demand for qualified welders across Brisbane’s fabrication sector has remained consistent, and why coded and multi-process welders are the harder end of the market to fill.
What We Screen For
- Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (or equivalent trade qualification) — the baseline for all First Class Welder placements
- Demonstrated post-trade welding experience in a manufacturing, fabrication or structural environment
- Process capability matched to the role — MIG as a minimum; TIG required for stainless steel, food-grade, aluminium or precision fabrication applications
- Weld procedure qualification (coded welder status) for roles involving pressure-rated, structural or compliance-driven welding
- Ability to read weld symbols and fabrication drawings and determine joint preparation and sequence independently
- Consistent weld quality with a low rework rate — candidates who can demonstrate this through previous employment or test welds are prioritised
- Material-specific experience — mild steel, stainless, aluminium — is screened based on the employer’s primary work
Licenses and Tickets
- Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade
- Weld Procedure Qualification (coded — role dependent)
- Working at Heights (site dependent)
- Confined Space Entry (relevant for vessel and tank work)
- Forklift Licence (site dependent)
How We Place First Class Welders
Trade-qualified welders with multi-process capability and a clean weld quality record don't stay available for long. We place both active candidates and welders we have existing relationships with. This matters when a workshop needs someone who can pass a test weld and hit the floor running.
Permanent Recruitment
The most common engagement for this role. We source and place permanent first class welders with the process capability, material experience and weld quality record your workshop requires
Contract and Fixed-Term
Relevant for businesses managing project-based fabrication, production uplifts or parental leave cover. Coded welders in particular are well suited to fixed-term arrangements tied to specific projects or shutdowns.
Labour Hire
Well suited to fabrication businesses needing flexible welding capacity during growth periods, contract wins or peak production where permanent headcount is not yet confirmed.
Pay Rates for First Class Welders in Brisbane
Welder salaries in Brisbane’s manufacturing and fabrication sector reflect trade qualification status, process capability and whether the candidate holds weld procedure qualifications. Newly trade-qualified welders working in a single-process production environment typically start between $65,000 and $75,000. Those with multi-process capability — MIG and TIG — and a demonstrated track record producing consistent quality in a post-trade manufacturing role move toward $75,000 to $90,000.
Welders with weld procedure qualifications, stainless or aluminium specialisation, or a background in pressure vessel, structural or defence fabrication can reach $90,000 to $105,000 in Brisbane-based workshop roles.
Contract and labour hire engagements are common for project-based fabrication, production ramp-ups and shutdown coverage. Coded welders in particular are frequently placed on contract arrangements where the work is project-specific. These are quoted on an equivalent hourly rate.
