Hire Manual and CNC Machinists Brisbane
Every component your operation depends on started as raw material and a machinist who knew exactly what to do with it. This page covers what the role involves across Brisbane's precision engineering and manufacturing sector, what it pays and how Youngbrook places machinists who can set, program and inspect their own work.

ABOUT THIS ROLE
Manual and CNC machinists produce precision components by setting up and operating machine tools including lathes, mills, drills and grinders. In manual machining the operator controls the cut directly, applying trade knowledge and measurement skill to work material to specification. In CNC machining the machine follows a program. The machinist is responsible for writing or editing that program, setting tooling, proving the first-off and making adjustments to hold tolerance across a production run.
In practice, most Brisbane workshops want machinists who can operate across both. The ability to jump between a manual lathe and a CNC mill, read engineering drawings confidently and inspect finished components with precision measuring equipment is what separates a versatile workshop asset from someone who can only do one thing.
Brisbane machinists work across precision engineering workshops, defence and aerospace subcontractors, hydraulics and fluid power companies, industrial equipment manufacturers and general engineering businesses producing one-off and short-run components. The work demands accuracy, patience and a genuine understanding of how material behaves under cutting conditions.
Our trades and engineering recruitment guide covers why skilled machinists are among the hardest trades to fill in Brisbane’s manufacturing sector and why the gap between a capable operator and a competent programmer-setter is significant.
What We Screen For
- Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (Machinist / Fitter & Machinist or equivalent) — trade qualification expected for all placements
- Demonstrated experience operating manual and/or CNC machine tools in a precision engineering or manufacturing environment
- CNC programming capability — conversational or CAM-based — and ability to set and prove programs without relying on supervision
- Proficiency reading and interpreting engineering drawings including GD&T symbols, surface finish callouts and tight dimensional tolerances
- Competent use of precision measuring instruments and ability to inspect own work to drawing requirements
- Experience across more than one machine type — lathe and mill at minimum — is strongly preferred
- Methodical approach to setup, a low scrap rate and the discipline to stop and check rather than assume
Licenses and Tickets
- Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade
- Forklift Licence. Highly Advantageous
- Working at Heights
- Confined Space Entry
How We Place Manual and CNC Machinists
Trade-qualified machinists who can program, set and inspect their own work are in short supply in Brisbane. The best operators are rarely between jobs for long and are often placed through relationships rather than advertised roles.
Labour Hire
Suited to workshops needing flexible capacity during growth periods or while a permanent hire is being finalised.
Contract and Fixed-term
Relevant for businesses managing short-run production contracts, equipment transitions or periods where permanent headcount is not confirmed. We place experienced contract machinists who can contribute from day one.
Permanent Recruitment
The most common engagement for this role. We source and place permanent machinists with the machine capability, programming experience and precision discipline your workshop requires.
Pay Rates for Manual & CNC Machinists in Brisbane
Machinist salaries in Brisbane reflect trade qualification status, the breadth of machine capability and, critically, whether the candidate can program and set independently or requires support to do so. Newly qualified machinists or those operating in a single-machine capacity typically sit between $62,000 and $72,000.
Those with multi-machine experience, proven CNC programming ability and a track record holding tight tolerances move toward $72,000 to $85,000. Experienced machinists with CAM programming capability, multi-axis experience or a background in high-precision industries such as defence, aerospace or medical device manufacturing can reach $85,000 to $100,000.
Contract and labour hire arrangements are common for project-based work, production ramp-ups and short-run contracts where permanent headcount isn’t warranted. These are quoted on an equivalent hourly rate.
