Trade assistants support qualified tradespeople across mechanical, electrical, fabrication and civil work environments. The role varies significantly depending on the trade being supported and the environment. In a manufacturing maintenance setting a trade assistant might be preparing work areas, retrieving parts, assisting with equipment disassembly and keeping the workshop clean and organised. On a construction or civil site the role expands to include material handling, tool operation, basic preparation tasks and supporting the tradesperson through each stage of a job.
The role is not unskilled. The best trade assistants understand the work being done around them, anticipate what is needed next and operate safely in an environment where the pace is fast and the consequences of a mistake can be significant.
