Formwork carpenters construct the temporary structures that contain and shape concrete until it sets. The work covers walls, columns, slabs, stairs, retaining structures and elevated decks across residential, commercial and civil projects. On smaller sites the formwork carpenter works across the full cycle, setting out, building, stripping and moving. On larger civil and commercial projects the work is more specialised, with dedicated crews for each phase and a leading hand managing sequencing and output.
The trade requires a carpentry qualification and a solid understanding of how formwork systems behave under the load and pressure of a concrete pour. Errors in formwork construction are not cosmetic. They can result in structural failure, wasted concrete and serious safety incidents.
